"Britannia" is the national personification of Great Britain and later of the United Kingdom. The name is a Latinization of the native Brittonic word for the island of Pretanī. After the Roman Empire conquered these lands, Britannia became a Roman province, with territories south of Caledonia. Around that time the female figure of Britannia began to appear on some provincial Roman coins minted on the island. From 1672 Britannia was struck on some English and colonial coins.

The design of the British silver coin is by Philip Nathan. It depicts the figure of the woman warrior standing on a rock with the sea in the background. She wears a Corinthian helmet on her head, pulled back to reveal her face. In her right hand she holds a trident, and in her left - a shield and olive branch. Around the figure is the inscription "BRITANNIA 2022 1 oz 999 FINE SILVER". The obverse is designed by Jody Clark and includes a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, with the crown with the royal diamond tiara, the one she wore on her coronation.

The 2022 Britannia coin includes advanced security features built into the design: in the lower-left quadrant in a circle stands a hologram image that changes with the viewpoint - between a trident and a padlock; the background features surface animation reflecting the waves; another feature is the micro-text "DECUS ET TUTAMEN", which repeatedly appears on the inner edge between the central circle with the design and the outer edge with the inscriptions; the shield of Britain bears the flag of the Union, markedly tincture lines (also known as "heraldic colors") representing the colors of the flag.

The manufacturer

The Royal Mint was established in 886, making it one of the oldest mints in Europe. It is the institution minting circulating coins in the United Kingdom.

As a successor to the original mint in London, its traditions date back more than 1,100 years ago. For 800 years, the Mint has operated within the Tower of London before being moved to the Royal Mint Court. With the decimalization of the British Pound and the increased demand, the Mint had to relocate again. Thus, in 1968, the newly built production plant of the Royal Mint in the town of Llantrisant, Glamorgan, Wales, was opened.

Today, the Royal Mint strikes United Kingdom's circulation coins, as well as a wide range of investment bars and coins, commemorative medals, orders and more. The Mint exports to an average of 60 countries every year, which makes 70% of its total sales.
