Families from every corner of Bulgaria are united by the custom of placing a coin inside the Christmas Eve ritual bread – a talisman that is said to bring good health, fertility, and luck to whoever gets it. When the head of the household ritualistically breaks the bread and hands each member of the family a piece, and a few are dedicated to the Holy Mother of God, to the estate, and the livestock – if the coin ends up being in one of these pieces, that is considered an omen of good luck for the entire family. Usually the ritual bread, also known as "bogovica" or "badnyak", is round – a physical representation of nature’s cyclicity and the wheel of the year. Traditionally it is decorated with shapes made of dough, each bearing their own symbolic meaning – a cross, so that God may protect the home and family, accompanied by a sun, grapes, and ears of wheat that represent the hope that the following year will be abundant and prosperous.

Before use, take the coin out of the capsule and wrap it in household aluminum foil. You can now put the wrapped medal in the bread. After use, wash the medal carefully and put it back in the capsule.

Christmas Eve is one of the most significant and diligently observed family celebrations in the Bulgarian calendar, rich in ritualistic practices and highly revered.

As is typical of many holidays, the dinner table is the centrepiece of each Christmas Eve. As the last day of advent, the meals are only Lenten. On Christmas Eve, the table must be rich and abundant to ensure a fruitful year to come.

The number of dishes on the dinner table must be odd - seven, nine, eleven. This is because of the symbolism and meaning of numbers in Bulgarian folk culture. Due to their incompleteness, odd numbers are associated with life, and even numbers are associated with death.

The place of honour goes to the ritual bread, associated with abundance and fertility. It is no coincidence that a coin is stirred-up in the bread as a symbol of prosperity. The round shape of the bread (also known as "bogovica" or "badnyak") symbolises the circle of life and the endless repetition of the annual cycle. The decoration on the bread is also important. Traditionally, a cross is made out of dough near the upper edge so that God may protect the home and the family. The bread is decorated with a sun, grapes, and ears of wheat, hoping that the upcoming new year will be blessed with abundance and prosperity.

All around the country, burning incense over the ritual dinner table, and then around the whole house, is a respected custom. It is believed thatthis action consecrates and purifies the home, preparing it to welcome a new year.

Once the whole family gathers around the table, the eldest member breaks the bread. He sets aside a piece of it for Mary, Mother of God, the estate, the livestock, and each family member, starting from the eldest to the youngest. The belief is that whoever gets the coin will be the most fortunate during the new year.

After supper is over, the table is not cleared. It is believed, on Christmas Eve, the heavens open, and the souls of the dead relatives visit the home to feast as well.
