In honour of one of the most significant events in a Christian’s life we created the Holy Baptism gold medal - a precious and original gift that will preserve the memory of the day of the new spiritual beginning for years to come.

It is minted out of 2 grams of 999.9 fine gold, with a diameter of 18 mm in proof quality. The matte relief elements stand out against the mirror-like gloss of the field - an elegantly pronounced cameo effect that highlights every detail of the composition. The design was inspired by the symbolism incorporated into the rite and illustrates its invisible, spiritual aspects. The precious status of pure gold, combined with the customisation option, turns this medal into a truly impressive gift and a heartfelt keepsake that will last a lifetime.

The obverse can be laser engraved with a name or date, up to 14 characters – a truly personal finishing touch to this precious gift.

Design

The Holy Baptism is one of the seven major sacraments of Eastern Orthodoxy - religious rites through which the Holy Ghost grants God’s grace and the gift of eternal life. The purpose of the ritual is to cleanse the soul of the original sin, and - if the one being baptised is an adult - all sins personally committed thus far. Each element of the medal’s design is inspired by Orthodox Christian tradition and iconography.

Obverse

The obverse of the medal depicts the Holy Spirit in the form of a white dove mid-flight. This is Its most common interpretation in the New Testament. It is pictured from below - a visual reference to the famous Biblical scene of the Epiphany. The holy text holds that when Jesus Christ was baptised, the Holy Spirit personally descended over the river Jordan in the physical form of a dove.

The laurel branches in the composition are a reference to the day Jesus was welcomed into Jerusalem with gifts of laurel and olive branches - a reflection of the belief that through the holy baptism a person’s soul is welcomed into the Kingdom of God.

The final touch in the design is the words “Holy Baptism” written over the Holy Spirit in a traditional Old Church Slavonic font. Below, there’s a spot designated for personalised engraving.

Reverse

The centerpiece of the composition is the artistic rendition of a traditional Orthodox Christian cross. The cross is encircled in a frame of interlaced floral patterns inspired by the intricate wood carvings that adorn the iconostases across Bulgaria.

The image of the engraved medal is purely illustrative. It shows where and how the text is going to be positioned.

The Holy Spirit

According to most Christian denominations, God exists in three eternal, omnipotent and equal persons sharing a common essence - God the Father, God the Son and Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit proceeds from God the Father, but does not succeed Him, and God the Son is pre-eternally begotten of God the Father.

Christian iconography typically depicts the Holy Spirit in the corporeal form of a dove - a symbol of purity, peace and hope all over the world - the halo around its head signifying its holy status. In the Old and New Testaments, the Holy Spirit’s function is to deliver God's grace to the chosen. It plays a key role in a number of Biblical stories, often accompanying Jesus during his mission on earth.

During the baptism of Christ in the Jordan River, the Holy Spirit manifested in the physical form of a white dove, visible to all in attendance. As John the Baptist baptised Christ with water, so did Christ baptise the people with the Holy Spirit. The composition on the obverse is inspired by this scene and reflects the invisible presence of the Holy Ghost in the rite.

The design depicts the Holy Spirit holding laurel twigs - a symbol of the resurrection of Christ and the salvation his sacrifice brought humanity.

The Orthodox Christian Cross

The cross is an ancient symbol, deeply meaningful in a number of cultures all over the world, but modern times most closely associate it with the Christian religion. It embodies the sacrifice through which Jesus cleansed humanity of its sins. The reverse of the Holy Baptism gold medal bears an illustration of an Eastern Orthodox cross decorated with floral and geometric ornaments and a smaller cross at the tip of each end.

Floral Ornaments

The floral motifs interwoven around the cross on the medal's reverse are based on church wood carvings that adorn the interiors of places of worship all over Bulgaria. The masterfully crafted ornamentation was recreated in pure gold through the use of modern coin-minting technology.
