The design of the silver maple leaf is identical to that of the gold one. On the obverse are the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the face value of 5 Canadian dollars and the year of issue. The painting of Elizabeth II was painted in 2003 by the famous artist Susanna Blunt. It is the second portrait of a British monarch created by a Canadian artist for Canadian coins. The design presents the queen without a crown and on the left side of the portrait are included the years of her reign 1952 - 2022.
The reverse depicts a detailed relief image of Canada's most recognizable symbol - the maple leaf. Above it is the inscription "CANADA", central on both sides - purity 999.9, and below it - the type of metal and weight of the two official languages in Canada - English and French "FINE SILVER 1 OZ ARGENT PUR".
Since 2021 all Canadian Maple Leaf Coins have enhanced security features: radial lines, micro-engraved maple leaf and DNATM anti-counterfeiting technology. In the production of silver coins, MINTSHIELDTM technology, which protects the surface of the metal, is also applied.
The Canadian Royal Mint was established as a branch of the Royal Mint in 1908. On January 2, Governor Earl Gray struck the first domestically produced coin, a fifty-cent piece. The creation of the Royal Mint in Canada coincided with an era of growing gold production in the Yukon and British Columbia. The need to process this gold necessitated the establishment of a refinery, which was completed in 1911. The Canadian Mint even produced gun parts for Britain during World War I.
In 1936 the refinery, which is still operating today, was completed. Since 1988, the Canadian Mint has been minting silver Maple Leaf Coins with the highest purity of silver - 999.9 / 1000.
The Canadian Mint is a technological leader in coinage with its innovative protections against counterfeiting and protecting the surface of the silver.
