Design:
The design represents a union between the two faces of Easter as seen through the eyes of Bulgarian folk beliefs.
The resurrection of nature, expressed in the form of the flourishing and abundance of spring, intertwines with the Resurrection of Jesus in a common symbol - the egg, dyed in the color of life and the Blood of Christ.
The obverse recreates the red wax-resist style eggs Easter in Bulgaria is known for - a symbolic source of life in cultures from all over the world. This meaning is present in our folk beliefs as well, which attribute a variety of magical properties to eggs, such as healing, protection and cleansing. The colored Easter eggs are a reflection of this belief, with the red ones being the focal point. The intricately “drawn” floral and geometric patterns are inspired by the traditional wax-resist egg decorating method.
The composition of the reverse depicts a richly ornamented Eastern Orthodox cross - the embodiment of Jesus Christ’s sacrifice - and the inscription “Christ has risen!”
You get the medal in a luxury package with a magnetic closure - an elegant addition to the spring theme of the piece that also acts as its certificate of quality.

Easter
Bulgaria’s Easter traditions are an eclectic amalgamation of pagan customs and Christian interpretations.
The Christian belief that the Son of God died for humanity’s salvation and was then Resurrected is a reflection of one of the main philosophical principles of Christianity - the existence of life after death. It overlaps with the meaning of the rituals practiced during this period of the year - a celebration of the triumph of spring over winter and the beginning of a new life cycle. This aspect is reflected in the ritualistic dyeing and decoration of hard boiled eggs - they themselves being a symbol of life.
Easter is a movable feast - it takes place on the Sunday after the first full moon after the Spring Equinox.
The Easter Egg
The egg stands at the center of a number of creation myths from all over the globe - the cradle from which the universe, the world, or life itself originates. These beliefs are also present in Bulgaria’s folklore.
Eggs are at the center of a number of traditional cleansing, protection and divination practices. It is the Easter egg that holds the most power - the first one painted for the holiday, always entirely in red. It is an allegory for the Blood of Christ and life itself and possesses the ability to heal, protect and bring prosperity to the home.
People in western Bulgaria used to decorate eggs via a wax-resist method. They would draw geometric and floral patterns on the surface of the shell using beeswax. This was done using a wooden “pen” with a conical metal tip, which in the past was often made of silver. The hot dyes, when applied to the surface of the egg, would color everything they touched, aside from the parts covered in wax. It is this age-old technique that the obverse of our Silver Easter Egg aims to emulate.
The Orthodox Cross
Venerated since ancient times, today the cross is best known as an emblem of the Christian religion. It symbolizes the death of Jesus Christ, through which He gained absolution for all of humanity’s sins - it is this self-sacrifice, followed by His Resurrection, that Easter celebrates. The detailed ornamentation on the cross depicted on the Silver Easter Egg marks it as typically Orthodox
