For the obverse we chose the image of a peony - a symbol of feminine beauty, Bulgarian folk tradition holds that this flower brings good health and longevity and protects its bearer from negative influences. The crown of blooming sakura branches arched above it completes the feminine aesthetic. The reverse depicts a composition of classical ornaments.

The medal is struck in 999.9 fine silver in proof matt-gloss quality, with a diameter of 30 mm. The illustration on the obverse is colorized in soft purple hues via digital printing.

The peony

Bulgarian folklore praises the peony as a “maiden’s flower” - a symbol of feminine beauty with magical properties. It is said to bring good health, protection, beauty and longevity.

Cultures and mythologies from all over the world attribute symbolic meanings to the peony. An ancient Greek legend tells the story of the nymph Paeonia, whose beauty caught the attention of the god Apollo. The jealous Aphrodite transformed Paeonia into a flower, which is likely where the name of the flower genus originates - Paeonia. In Victorian England, it was believed that nymphs lay hidden between the leaves of peony blossoms, which gave them the meaning of “bashfulness” in the Language of Flowers.

The peony holds a special status in China - there it is considered a national symbol and a talisman for good luck and health, and its various names carry meanings such as “the king of flowers”, “the flower of honor and wealth” and “the most beautiful”.

The cherry blossom

The delicate pinkish blossoms of the cherry tree are among the most beloved harbingers of spring. Bulgarian tradition associates them, much like all fruit trees, with femininity.

Cherry blossoms hold a special place in Japanese culture - in the Land of the Rising Sun, the decorative sakura tree represents beauty and the cyclical renewal of nature.
