Easter and Christmas are the most celebrated holidays by Christians all around the world. Easter or the Resurrection of Jesus is the day on which Jesus Christ rises from the dead on the third day after being crucified and buried. This holiday reflects one of the basic philosophical principles of Christianity - the life after death. The Orthodox Church has ordained the Resurrection of Jesus to be celebrated on the Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox.
The holiday is celebrated for three days, and preparations begin a week earlier the so-called Passion (Holy) week. It is great every day of the week between Palm Sunday and Easter. On Holy Monday, according to tradition, the house must be cleaned. On Holy Thursday, the eggs are painted. The first egg must be a red one and with it, the hostess makes a cross on the foreheads of the children for health and luck during the year. On Good Friday housework is forbidden, it is meant for kneading ritual bread. The bread symbolizes the body of Jesus Christ, just as the red-painted eggs symbolize his blood.
It is believed that Bozhik (Christmas) and Easter are two brothers, as Christmas is older and more settled, while Easter is younger and wilder and likes to wear new garments, so for the holiday people wear their new clothes. Easter egg tapping is one of the most fun Easter traditions that is eagerly awaited, especially by children.
According to folk tradition, Easter also marks the resurrection of nature for a new life, the victory of spring over winter. Both customs and rites closely intertwine paganism and Christianity, which makes the celebration of our Bulgarian Easter so colourful and exciting.
