Bulmint gives the gift of life with a voluntary unpaid blood donation campaign

In honour of World Blood Donor Day, we held our first voluntary unpaid blood donation campaign.
On June 20, the Plovdiv Regional Center for Transfusion Hematology’s mobile medical unit visited Bulmint’s base of operations, so that every member of the company could get the chance to contribute to the annual “Be strong! Donate blood!” initiative.
28 members of our team took part in the initiative, providing much needed help in the healthcare system’s efforts to acquire lifesaving blood and blood products for the patients in the Plovdiv, Pazardzhik, Smolyan, Haskovo and Kardzhali provinces.
Despite modern medicine’s steadfast development over the past few decades, there is one important and often lifesaving cure that has yet to be synthesised in a lab - blood.
Accessible, safe blood and blood products are a cornerstone of modern healthcare and a lifesaving measure for a number of ailments and injuries. These bioproducts retain their healing properties for 36 days - in order to maintain the amount required to treat all patients in need, hospitals need a constant influx of donors.
According to a statistic by the National Transfusion Hematology Center, 127 472 people donated blood in 2022, 32 023 of whom were classified as “regular” donors. This marks a notable rise since 2020 and 2021, but the record-high results from 2018 and 2019 remain unmatched.
Patients in need of blood transfusions include those suffering from acute bloodloss as a result of trauma, burn victims, those in need of surgery, obstetric interventions, and pregnant women suffering from Rh disease. Blood transfusions play a vital role in the treatment of a number of congenital disorders.
“Be strong! Donate blood!” is a joint initiative by the Ministry of Health and the Plovdiv Regional Center for Transfusion Hematology. It takes place every year around June 14 - the anniversary of the birth of Karl Landsteiner, the Nobel-prize winning biologist and immunologist who discovered the ABO blood group system.
A number of annual initiatives and campaigns encourage the voluntary donation of blood as an expression of altruism and compassion, and specialised medical facilities all over the country accept donations all year round.
We are proud that our team took on the Ministry of Health and the RCTH’s cause as their own. We plan on turning this wonderful campaign into an annual tradition at Bulmint, so that we can continue to spread the gift of life and good health among those in need.
