For our second medal in the #Sofia Collection, we chose Eagles’ Bridge - a historic monument and a key intersection for the capital’s citizens.
The obverse depicts the emblematic bronze eagle statues that gave the bridge its name. The shield from the Principality of Bulgaria’s coat of arms is visible at the base of the stone columns they are perched upon. In the background, you can see some of the surrounding buildings - an integral part of the square at the heart of which this symbol of the capital stands.
The reverse draws inspiration from Sofia’s coat of arms - with four opposing quadrants, similar to the fields on a shield. It depicts other symbols of the city - the Church of Saint George, the “St. Cyril and Methodius” National Library, the Monument to the Tsar Liberator and Vitosha Mountain.
The medal comes in a luxury package, which also serves as its certificate of authenticity and quality. It is issued with a limited mintage of 3000.

#Sofia Collection is a commemorative collection of silver medals, dedicated to the capital of Bulgaria and the rich cultural heritage it comprises.
For the obverse of the medals, we have selected the five cultural and architectural landmarks that best encapsulate the rich history of the city - "Saint Alexander Nevsky" Cathedral, Eagles' Bridge, Sofia University and The Statue of Sofia.
On the reverse of each medal is an illustration of four other symbols of the city, inextricable from its status as a historical and cultural centre - The Rotunda St. George, St. Cyril and Methodius National Library, the Monument to the Tsar Liberator and Vitosha Mountain. The design is inspired by the city’s coat of arms - the four landmarks are divided into four opposing quadrants, akin to the four heraldic fields on the shield.
The medals in the collection were struck in fine silver 999.9, with a diameter of 38.6mm, and a weight of 1 troy ounce (31.1 grams).
Each medal in the #Sofia issue is a limited edition, with only 3000 pieces per design in production. This makes them a valuable addition to any collection, as well as a meaningful and original gift.
Eagles’ Bridge was built in 1891 over the Perlovska River in the then-eastern outskirts of Sofia - a symbolic gate to the recently established capital and the beginning of the road to Tsarigrad. Since then, the city has grown and today the structure serves as an entry point into the city center.
Eagles’ Bridge is located in the same place where, in 1878, the Bulgarian prisoners from Diyarbakir - a city where those who rose against the empire were imprisoned - returned home to a solemn procession. Their release was one of the terms of the Treaty of San Stefano. This is also where a triumphal arch was erected to welcome the Russian imperial commissioner during his trip to the capital of the newly-liberated Bulgaria. Today the bridge is a symbol of freedom - a meaning embodied in the bronze eagles spreading their wings over it like celestial guardians.
The Eagles’ Bridge project was helmed by Václav Kolář - head architect of Sofia at the time - and eng. Václav Prošek, who is also responsible for building Lions’ Bridge. At the four corners of the bridge stand four angular craftsman pillars. A metal plaque shaped like the shield from the coat of arms of the Principality of Bulgaria is built into the base of each pillar. The name of the city and the year the bridge was built are etched into the shields. The four structures support four ornamented candelabra (street lamps). The tip of each pillar is shaped like a stone orb, with a cast bronze statue of an eagle perched atop - the inspiration behind the bridge’s name. The person behind the idea for the shape of the bronze statues is unknown, but the symbolism is clear - freedom, power and strength. Their number signifies the four cardinal directions.
The story of Eagles’ Bridge continues today. Over the years it has expanded, its south wing - moved, pedestrian areas added and secured with cast iron railings. Honored guests to the city have been welcomed at this bridge, among which Kaiser Wilhelm II, Nikita Khrushchev, Yuri Gagarin and others. Today, the bridge is part of the composition on the 20 lev note.
