The coin is designed by Thomas Pesendorfer, chief engraver of the Austrian Mint. The obverse depicts the famous Goldener Saal organ of the Vienna Musikverein, known worldwide for the Philharmonic's New Year's concerts. The inscription "REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH" stands above it, as well as the weight, type and purity of the metal, the year of issue, and the face value. The reverse presents a composition of eight characteristic orchestral instruments: a cello in the centre, four violins on both sides, and in the background - a horn, bassoon and harp and the inscription "WIENER PHILHARMONIKER" in a semicircle. Interestingly, since the year of the first issue, the motif of the Vienna Philharmonic coins has always been the same. In 2002, the face value changed from 200 shillings to 10 euros. Since then, the only thing that has changed is the year of the issue.

The Austrian Mint (Münze Österreich) was found in 1194. The event that marked its beginning was the payment of a ransom of 12 tons of silver by England for the release of King Richard the Lionheart. It was paid to the Duke of Austria Leopold V Babenberg, who decided to start minting silver coins using a part of this silver. That laid the foundation of the Austrian Mint, which for more than 825 years now continues to create coins of exceptional artistic value and craftsmanship. Today, the Mint manufactures one of the most popular fine gold coins in the world - the Vienna Philharmonic.
