The gold bullion Sovereign coin is The Royal Mint’s flagship product. It has a face value of one British pound and is minted out of 7.31 g of 916.7 fine gold in a diameter of 22.05 mm.

Тhe history of the current version of the Sovereign began in 1817. It was based on a coin authorised by Henry VII in 1489. In the 16th century, a one-pound coin of the same name was issued. The illustration of Saint George and the dragon that today adorns the reverse of the modern Sovereign was designed by Benedetto Pistrucci specifically for the revival of this line.

The product is an assortment of Sovereign coins with different years of issue. On the obverse is the effigy of the monarch of Great Britain who reigned during the respective year it was minted in.

The manufacturers offer gold and silver investment coins without a certificate.

On the reverse of the gold bullion Sovereign coin in a Neoclassical style is a depiction of the legendary battle between Saint George and the dragon. In Benedetto Pistrucci’s design, the only armour he is wearing is the helmet on his head, along with a few pieces on his lower legs. In newer coins he is armed not with the spear we have come to associate the warrior saint with, but with a short sword called a gladius. Behind him, his cloak majestically billows in the wind, and some versions feature a plume on his helmet. In the earliest design, in his hand he held a piece of the spear he had broken during his fight with the dragon. The beast itself lies wounded at his feet, and his horse is on its hind legs – half attacking, half shrinking away from its foe.

The Royal Mint was established in 886, making it one of the oldest mints in Europe. It is the institution minting circulating coins in the United Kingdom.

As a successor to the original mint in London, its traditions date back more than 1,100 years ago. For 800 years, the Mint has operated within the Tower of London before being moved to the Royal Mint Court. With the decimalization of the British Pound and the increased demand, the Mint had to relocate again. Thus, in 1968, the newly built production plant of the Royal Mint in the town of Llantrisant, Glamorgan, Wales, was opened.

Today, the Royal Mint strikes United Kingdom's circulation coins, as well as a wide range of investment bars and coins, commemorative medals, orders and more. The Mint exports to an average of 60 countries every year, which makes 70% of its total sales.
