"Britannia" is the national personification of Great Britain and later of the United Kingdom. The name is a latinisation of the native Brittonic word for the island of Pretanī. After the Roman Empire conquered these lands, Britannia became a Roman province that encompassed the territories south of Caledonia. Britannia, depicted as a goddess from classical mythology, first appeared around that time on provincial coins minted on the island. From 1672 onwards Britannia becomes a recurring fixture on English and and some colonial coins.
The design of the modern Britannia coin is by Philip Nathan. The lady warrior is depicted pudly standing on a cliff, with stylised sea waves as a backdrop. She is wearing a Corinthian helmet, pulled back to reveal her face. In her right hand she is holding a trident, and in her left - a shield and olive branch. Around the figure is the inscription " BRITANNIA 2024 1 oz 999 FINE GOLD". The obverse design features the effigy of King Charles III by Martin Jennings and the circumscription “CHARLES III D G REX F D”, along with the face value (100 POUNDS).
The Britannia coin includes advanced security features built into the design: in the lower-left quadrant in a circle stands a hologram image that changes when viewed under different angles - from a trident to a padlock; the wave-patterned background features so-called “surface animation” and appears to move as it reflects the light; another feature is the micro-text "DECUS ET TUTAMEN", which repeatedly appears on the inner edge between the central circle with the design and the outer edge with the main circumscription; Britannia’s shield bears the flag of the Union, here depicted via tincture lines that represent the colors of the flag.
The Royal Mint was established in 886, making it one of the oldest mints in Europe. It is the institution minting circulating coins in the United Kingdom.
As a successor to the original mint in London, its traditions date back more than 1,100 years ago. For 800 years, the Mint has operated within the Tower of London before being moved to the Royal Mint Court. With the decimalization of the British Pound and the increased demand, the Mint had to relocate again. Thus, in 1968, the newly built production plant of the Royal Mint in the town of Llantrisant, Glamorgan, Wales, was opened.
Today, the Royal Mint strikes United Kingdom's circulation coins, as well as a wide range of investment bars and coins, commemorative medals, orders and more. The Mint exports to an average of 60 countries every year, which makes 70% of its total sales.
